Whenever I search on Youtube for something related to business I will most likely stumble upon a video of Gary. Something I wanted to point out, is his outstanding capability to drive attention to himself and his businesses. This is how Gary Vaynerchuk leverages video.
Gary Vaynerchuk, born 14 November 1975 in Babruysk, Belarus, in the former USSR. In 1978 his parents were fortunate enough to find their way to America as part of an exchange program where Soviet Jews were allowed to immigrate to the US in exchange for food aid. The first few years in the US were spent in a small studio apartment in Queens with 8 other family members. Gary’s father Sasha began working at a relative’s liquor store in New Jersey and eventually moved the family to Edison, NJ.
Today Gary Vaynerchuk is a serial entrepreneur, CEO of Vaynermedia, venture capitalist, 4-time New York Times bestselling author, one of the most sought-after public speakers alive today and an early investor in companies such as Twitter, Tumblr, Venmo and Uber.
When Gary Vaynerchuk graduated from College in 1998 he went to work for his father’s business WineLibrary. When he got involved in the family business, Winelibrary was grossing around 3 million dollars a year in revenue. From 1998 to 2006 Gary grew WineLibrary to a 40 million dollar a year in revenue business, by improving operations and being one of the first people to leverage search marketing (SEO & SEM) and E-mail lists. In 2006 Gary came up with the video series WineLibrary TV. WineLibrary TV was a low budget wine show, wherein he talked about wines and tasted them. From spending millions of dollars on search marketing, he now almost had no marketing costs and still grew his business exponentially. Gary was able to do this by grabbing the attention of people through his wine show. After uploading a couple hundred episodes he really started getting traction and eventually got invited to come to the Today Show, Conan and many more. This exploded both WineLibrary and his Personal Brand.
In 2009 Gary decided to leave WineLibrary and start a company with his brother AJ Vaynerchuk. When Gillette asked him to manage their Twitter community since Gary had a huge following on Twitter, Vaynermedia was brought to life. Today Vaynermedia is a full-service digital marketing agency doing 200 million in yearly revenue and has over 800 employees. While building VaynerMedia, Gary once again started a video series in 2014, this time it revolved around his personal brand. The #AskGaryVee Show, a show wherein he answers questions asked by his twitter followers and interviews successful entrepreneurs. In 2015 Gary came up with another new video concept, DailyVee. A daily vlog wherein he showcases the life of a successful entrepreneur starring, you guessed it, Gary Vaynerchuk himself. These two video formats allowed him to create content across all social media platforms. For example, short pieces of The #AskGaryVee Show are turned into a Podcast or whenever Gary says something of great value in his vlog, this will be turned into a quote and posted on Instagram. Today he has 3 million + followers on Instagram, 1 million+ followers on LinkedIn, 1 million + subscribers on Youtube, 2 million + followers on Facebook and has hired 20 + people to create content for his personal brand.
Throughout his career, Gary produced an obnoxious amount of video content to drive attention to what he is doing. The attention he drives to himself and his businesses is one of his cornerstones to being the success he is today.
